Kamatchi Amman Temple - Kanchipuram

The state of Tamilnadu is home to numerous Amman temples, but the most renowned and influential one is the Sir Kamatchi Amman temple in Kanchipuram. Spanning across a vast area of 5 acres, this temple stands as a true masterpiece and is often compared to the magnificent Madurai Meenakshi Amman temple. The sheer sight of this grand structure evokes a deep sense of devotion within us. The temple boasts four towers, each facing a different direction, and the inner tower of the Kamatchi shrine is adorned entirely with gold, creating a mesmerizing spectacle.

Sri Kamatchi Amman temple attracts devotees from all corners of the world, resulting in a perpetually bustling atmosphere filled with various celebrations and events. At the heart of the temple lies a sacred tank known as the theppakulam, which further enhances the temple's beauty. After offering their prayers to Goddess Kamatchi, devotees often find solace by sitting beside the tank and immersing themselves in the enchanting ambiance. The architectural style of the temple is distinctly Dravidian and is believed to have a history dating back 1000 years. Despite being primarily dedicated to Amman, the temple also houses separate sanctums for other Hindu deities such as Lakshmi, Vinayaka, Ayyappan, Kalabhairavar, Mahisha Sura Marthini, Shiva, Muruga, and the Kalvar Perumal.

Situated in Kanchipuram, the Kamatchi Amman temple holds a special place among the devotees. What sets Goddess Kamatchi apart from other Ammans is her serene and tranquil nature, which defies the usual fierce and powerful characteristics associated with such deities. The mere sight of her intricately carved face has the ability to calm even the most troubled minds. She is depicted in a yogic posture, known as Padmasana, and possesses four arms. In her upper left hand, she holds a Sugarcane bow, while her upper right hand carries a Lotus and a parrot. Her lower hands are adorned with powerful weapons, symbolizing her control over the world and all its affairs. The Kamatchi shrine is located within the Gayathri Shrine (mandapam), and the tower above it is beautifully embellished, adding to the divine aura of the temple.
