Legend has it that the main idol of Kannaki, carved from a stone brought from the Himalayas, presides over the temple, alongside shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva and Lord Karuppaswamy. The legend of Kannaki, depicted in the Tamil epic Silappathikaram, recounts her unwavering love for her husband Kovalan, despite his betrayal. Upon proving Kovalan's innocence in a wrongful accusation, Kannaki's fury razes Madurai. Witnessing her ascension to celestial realms alongside Kovalan, King Senguttuvan erected a rock temple in her honor.

Special prayers are offered during April's full moon, while the Chittirai Pournima sees elaborate abhishegam ceremonies with water sourced from Suruli Falls, symbolizing purification and harmony in familial relationships.
