Pitchavaram Mangrove Forests

Cuddalore, a charming small district in Tamil Nadu, is bordered by the Bay of Bengal to the east. The distinct aroma of dried fish and the humid air make Cuddalore a prime example of Indian coastal land.

Despite its size, Cuddalore boasts several notable attractions for leisure activities. One such gem is the renowned Pichavaram mangrove forest, one of India's treasures and one of the largest in the world. This exceptional location is truly a must-visit. Situated between the Vellar and Coleroon estuaries, the Pichavaram mangrove forest is the world's second-largest mangrove forest.

The sight of lush trees emerging from the water and casting a green canopy over the sea is truly spectacular. This forest serves as a sanctuary for numerous endangered species, drawing in many tourists to witness its rare beauty.

Encompassing an area of 1,100 hectares and extending to the Bay of Bengal, this vast mangrove forest comprises around 50 islands. A cruise through this enchanting forest is a mesmerizing experience, with mangrove forests, root tunnels, and branches lining the canals on all sides. It is an adventure worth embarking on.

Exploring the narrow canals on a cruise allows visitors to marvel at a variety of rare plants and trees, providing an exciting and educational experience. Despite being ravaged by the 2004 cyclone that struck the Tamil Nadu coast, the beauty of this forest remains intact. Plan a trip with your family to this incredible destination and create lasting memories.

The Pichavaram mangrove forest is accessible throughout the year, with the best time to visit being from January to June.
