National art gallery - Chennai

The National Art Gallery, located within the Government Museum Complex in Chennai, stands as a significant heritage structure in the city and a recent addition to the art galleries across the nation. Erected in 1906 by the British, this grand sandstone building underwent a comprehensive restoration process and was unveiled to the public in January 2021. Its colonial and Indo-Saracenic architectural style makes it a distinctive landmark that is hard to overlook for anyone passing by.

During the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Queen Victoria, the National Art Gallery, initially known as Victoria Memory Hall, was erected as a tribute. Renowned architect Henry Irwin designed this masterpiece in the Indo-Saracenic style, utilizing sandstone as the primary material. Recognized as a heritage site by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), the National Art Gallery stands as a testament to the city's rich cultural heritage.

After being closed to the general public in 2002 due to structural issues and flaws, the National Art Gallery underwent a comprehensive restoration process,which amounted to approximately ₹ 110 million, successfully revived the gallery's splendor.

Visitors can explore the ground floor's captivating exhibition on the evolution of industries and handicrafts in Tamilnadu, while the first floor showcases a diverse collection of traditional and modern paintings from various schools of art, including works by renowned Indian artists.

Raja Ravi Verma, the renowned pioneer of modern art in India, is given a dedicated section in the gallery, showcasing his exquisite paintings that are considered national treasures. These masterpieces are beautifully illuminated with state-of-the-art fibre optic lighting, creating a captivating ambiance for visitors to immerse themselves in Verma's artistic brilliance.

On the same floor, visitors can explore an impressive collection of modern sculptures by exceptional artists such as D.P Roy Chowdhury and S. Dhanpal, among others. These sculptures, carefully curated, add another layer of artistic excellence to the gallery, showcasing the diverse talents and creativity of these exemplary artists.

Moving to the second floor, visitors are transported into the mesmerizing world of rock and cave art through the Rock and Cave Art Gallery. Using cutting-edge technology, this gallery recreates the natural environment of caves, providing an immersive experience for visitors. Within this simulated setting, guests embark on a captivating half-hour journey, exploring renowned rock art sites like Perumukkal, Alambadi, Keezhvalai, Vellarikombai, and Iduhatti. 

This unique exhibition allows visitors to appreciate the rich history and cultural significance of these ancient art forms. Additionally, the gallery showcases a variety of other highlights, including periodic books and manuscripts, ancient handicrafts, and historical artifacts. Notably, visitors can also admire Glass Paintings, Deccani Paintings, and Leather paintings, further enriching their artistic experience.

Chennai experiences a tropical climate with both dry and wet seasons, resulting in hot and humid weather throughout most of the year. The ideal time to plan a visit to the National Art Gallery is between November and February when the temperatures are more moderate and comfortable for exploring the gallery and its exhibits.

The nearest metro station to the gallery is Chennai Central, situated approximately 2 kilometers away, while the closest airport is the Chennai International Airport, located around 18 kilometers from the gallery.
