Poondi-Kodaikkanal

The series of discoveries commenced when Sir Robert Bruce Foote accidentally stumbled upon a stone tool in Pallavaram in the year 1863 CE. This was followed by the unearthing of numerous artifacts in and around Poondi, near Chennai. This remarkable breakthrough in the realm of prehistoric archaeology pushed back the origins of mankind in Tamil Nadu to over half a million years ago, thereby placing this region on the global map of prehistoric culture. Interestingly, the Poondi reservoir, which serves as a vital water source for Chennai, holds significant importance for archaeologists and geologists worldwide. Additionally, the Gudiyum cave, the first of its kind in India, was discovered by geologist Sir Robert Bruce Foote near Poondi in Tiruvallur taluk of Tiruvallur district. Reaching this cave involves traversing through adventurous paths amidst the serene forests, making it an exciting expedition for both trekkers and nature enthusiasts.
